Staffing Companies Make News
ASA members are giving newspaper readers the scoop about the advantages of staffing.
"Today, more people are using staffing companies as their first choice when starting a job search because of the benefits [they] provide," Hans Schultz, CSP, of ASA member Landmark Staffing Resources told Wisconsin's Appleton Post-Crescent readers. Schultz discussed competitive wages, training programs, and coaching resources. He used ASA data to demonstrate that the industry's job opportunities are "real," pointing out that "12 million temporary and contract employees are hired by U.S. staffing firms during the course of a year."
"The staffing industry matches millions of people to millions of jobs annually," wrote Andrea Simmons, a district manager for ASA member Kelly Services. In "Staffing Service Has Many Benefits," a Florida Star-Banner article, Simmons gave job seekers an overview of the industry by discussing its five key messages: jobs, flexibility, bridge, choice, and training. She anchored these messages with data from the association's staffing facts sheet and the staffing employee survey—both available online.

HR Pros Concerned About Talent
About half of human resource professionals polled in a recent survey cited employee attraction and retention as the top challenge facing them for the next three years. The Top Five Total Rewards Priorities survey is conducted annually by Deloitte Consulting and the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists.
"Health care costs have consistently been HR's top concern for the past eight years," wrote Marlene Prost in a Human Resource Executive article. But this year, for the first time in the 13-year history of the survey, 77% of high-revenue companies ranked "attracting, motivating, and retaining talent" as a greater worry than health care costs.
The work force is shrinking as baby boomers retire and Generation Y employees seek jobs that offer flexibility. Prost quoted Richard Wahlquist, ASA president and chief executive officer, who said, "Young workers…have a stronger desire to achieve a greater equilibrium in work and life."
